Hey gang! I'm in beautiful Hawaii, working with schools to improve leadership, culture, and climate. Today, I want to discuss something powerful—magnets. No, not the ones on your fridge. I’m talking about magnets within a school.
What’s a Magnet?
A magnet is a place where people gather. It’s a spot that pulls people in, bringing them together to connect, talk, and build relationships. Every school has them, even if they aren’t obvious. Maybe it's the teacher’s lounge, the football games, or a specific hallway where students always seem to meet up. Magnets create moments for people to bond, and those bonds strengthen school culture.
The Slushie Machine Story
I have a friend who works at a gas and oil refinery plant. As a supervisor, he wanted to create a space where workers could connect. So, he bought a slushie machine and placed it in a central spot. At first, people questioned it. Why waste money on a slushie machine?
But then, something interesting happened. Workers started stopping by to grab a slushie. They hung around, talked, and built relationships. That small decision created a magnet—a place where people naturally gathered. Those connections improved communication and teamwork. All because of a slushie machine.
Find Your School’s Magnet
I’m not saying you need to run out and buy a slushie machine. But let’s be honest, that would be pretty cool. What I am saying is this: Find the places and moments in your school that bring people together.
It could be an event after school, a social gathering, or a casual space where staff can unwind. Maybe it’s a game night, a hallway with comfy seating, or a morning coffee station for teachers. The key is to create intentional spaces where people feel comfortable connecting.
Why Magnets Matter
A school’s climate is more than rules and policies. It’s about relationships. When people know each other and connect, they work together better. Students feel supported. Teachers collaborate more. Leaders gain trust. And all of that makes a school stronger.
So, here’s your challenge:
- Identify the magnets already in your school. Where do people naturally gather?
- If you can’t find one, create one! Start small—a fun staff lunch, a weekly student meet-up, or a casual drop-in space.
- Keep it simple. It doesn’t have to be big or expensive. A comfortable space, a fun tradition, or a small treat can make all the difference.
A great school culture doesn’t happen by accident. It happens when we create spaces for connection. So, go out there and build your magnet!
Stand tall, stay strong, and keep making an impact.
